Grape prices in Ukraine have significantly increased compared to last year, ranging from €1.33 to €1.88 per kilogram, according to Tetiana Popovych, marketing chief of the Shuvар market in Lviv. The rise in prices is attributed to both unfavourable weather conditions and the consequences of the war.
Grape cultivation in Ukraine is predominantly concentrated in the south, where the climate is favourable for this crop. Key vineyards supplying products to domestic markets are located in this region. Zakarpattia is also known for its viticulture, particularly focusing on wine grape varieties.
However, the war has introduced serious changes to this sector. Occupied territories in Kherson and parts of Mykolaiv Oblast, previously recognized as key grape-growing regions, have suffered significant destruction. Many vineyards have been damaged or destroyed, leading to reduced yields and rising prices.
Import supplies of grapes have also been affected. Additional factors influencing prices include disruptions in logistics chains due to military actions and rising fuel costs. Turkey is one of the main suppliers of grapes to Ukraine, with its fruit typically appearing on markets after the end of the Ukrainian season. Italy and Spain provide quality table grapes, usually during the winter months.
Due to the unstable situation, many producers have reduced vineyard areas or shifted to less demanding crops that require less care and shorter growing times.
