There is a substantially lower volume of passion fruit coming out of Colombia this year than in the past. "Prices have been high for months, well above €10 per box. We only had a small dip in price in the summer in July and August, but demand is always a lot lower in this period due to the supply of (summer) fruit. Prices have dropped a lot less compared to other years," said Yex's Dion van Vliet. "We are now going back into the period with extra demand in connection with the end-of-year rush, so it looks like we are going to end the year positively in price terms as well."
According to the product manager, there are a number of reasons for the lower volume. "For instance, El Niño and other weather conditions are resulting in lower productions from the fields. In addition, the low market prices of the past year have caused a large part of Colombian growers to plant less. Strong demand and high prices will cause Colombia's growers to scale up and more fruit will be available in the market again by 2025!"
"With our Discovered brand, we hope to inspire consumers regarding passion fruit. We still see a lot of potential in this fruit given its versatility and delicious taste. There are many uses throughout the day from breakfast to dessert and everything in between. On top of this, we see that the taste of passion fruit is appreciated by young and old alike!"
