In Adana, Turkey, the harvest season for early tangerine varieties such as Primasol, Eary-N, Okitsu Wase, and Miho Wase has commenced. The cultivation of these tangerines spans approximately 379 thousand acres, with the fruits being manually harvested and transported to markets. Despite the anticipation of a fruitful season, the yield is projected at 500 thousand tons, a significant decrease from the previous year's production due to adverse hot weather conditions impacting agricultural outputs. Mehmet Akın Doğan, President of the Yüreğir Chamber of Agriculture, highlighted the detrimental effects of climate on citrus yields, estimating a total citrus production of around 1 million tons, a stark contrast to last year's 3.2 million tons. Tangerine prices currently range from 15-18 lira, with potential increases expected. However, the reduced yield poses challenges for farmers aiming to achieve profitability. Tangerine producer Uğur Özgiray also noted the disparity between favorable prices and the low harvest volume, underscoring the resilience of farmers amidst these challenges.
