Onion market sees variability in demand and supply across the U.S.

Chuck Hill from The Onion House in Weslaco, TX, reported a slowdown in the onion market as of October 16, noting a decrease in demand. Despite this, Hill emphasized the outstanding quality of onions from their Olathe grower and mentioned that shipments from Corinne, UT, are expected to commence next week, with both regions typically operating through the holiday season.

Hayden Bingham of L&M Cos. in Raleigh, NC, shared updates on ending programs in Rocky Ford, CO, and Ulysses, KS, with shipments continuing from Warden, WA. Bingham noted a slowdown in demand attributed to the IFPA tradeshow week, yet remained optimistic about the holiday season boosting the market. Challenges in freight, particularly with flatbeds and southeastern deliveries, were also highlighted.

Doug Bulgrin of Gumz Farms in Endeavor, WI, reported a complete harvest with lower yields but good demand, particularly for medium yellows. Bulgrin anticipates a market increase once current supplies are cleared out and mentioned no issues in securing transportation.

Dan Borer with Keystone Fruit Marketing from Walla Walla, WA, commented on the completed Northwest harvest and stable demand. Borer also discussed the unaffected import market from Peru, despite potential strike concerns, and success with the local Northwest Sweets program.

Brad Sumner from Pacific Coast Trading Co. in Portland discussed the organic onion market, noting ample supplies and steady demand. Sumner mentioned a slight market adjustment, particularly with red onions, and emphasized the importance of medium yellow onions in the market.

Rick Greener of Greener Produce in Ketchum, ID, reported good demand across various states, with quality remaining high. Greener highlighted a strong market for red onions and the potential for market adjustments for whites and yellows. Transportation challenges were also noted, especially with changing weather conditions.

Chris Woo provided insights into the Idaho-E. Oregon region, mentioning the completion of the onion harvest and the exceptional quality of this season's crop. Woo highlighted steady pricing and moderate demand, with expectations for increased interest post-IFPA tradeshow.
