Ukraine adds 12 new potato varieties to register amid climate adaptation efforts

In 2024, Ukraine's State Register of Plant Varieties Suitable for Distribution was updated to include 12 new potato varieties originating from France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The French contributions are Folk, Nafida, Edony, and Decibel. From Germany, Corinna, Euroviva, Virginia, and Ventana were added, while the Netherlands provided Norman, Cayman, Hermosa, and Heraclea. The register now lists approximately 230 potato varieties.

Ukrainian potato cultivation is adjusting to shifting weather patterns across the country, including traditionally cooler northern areas. Igor Chechitko, the director of HZPC Ukraine, noted that in response to these climate challenges, professional growers are adopting irrigation systems and applying protective measures more effectively. There's also a growing interest among Ukrainian farmers in varieties that are more resistant to drought conditions.
