The supply of imported dragon fruit is plentiful at the moment. "The supply is coming from Ecuador. They're the main source of fruit right now and they're just coming into their season," says Alan Goldberg of A&B Tropical Produce, noting that while the country ships the exotic fruit almost year-round right now, now is the time when it is coming into its traditionally heavy part of the year.
The supply looks to be similar to this time last year. "There will be peaks and valleys in supply but a lot of it is dictated by the weather. However the prediction is for good supply over the next few months," says Goldberg, adding that the quality of dragon fruit is also expected to improve.
Meanwhile, Florida has wrapped up its fall production of dragon fruit.
How demand is developing
Demand is on the softer side which could be due to a variety of reasons–everything from the state of the economy to the increasingly varied choice of exotic fruits available to consumers on store shelves. There is hope that as the holiday season arrives, that will strengthen the demand for dragon fruit.
Where does this leave pricing? "Our pricing is a little bit lower than last year, but not by much," says Goldberg.
