Better weather conditions for Moroccan strawberries

A new season of strawberries unfolds in the Larache region, the stronghold of red fruit production in Morocco. The industry continues to be subject to volatility, with each year bringing its share of changes in planting decisions.

Local grower Oussama Baioua says: "We've finished planting strawberries, and the first harvest is due on November 20. The area devoted to strawberries has increased. In my case, I've gone from 2 ha to 3 ha this season, at the expense of raspberries. In the region, too, the area devoted to strawberries has increased, judging by the number of plants distributed this year compared with last season."

"Strawberries gave good yields and prices last season, which has renewed grower interest. However, acreage has increased compared with the last three seasons but remains below its highest recorded level. Many growers are now interested in other fruits such as avocados."

The grower says he is relieved by this year's weather conditions, much milder than last season. He adds: "We've had a lot less chergui and temperature variations. And above all, we haven't had any violent winds like last October's storm Bernard."

"If there is a problem, it's the quality of the plants, especially those of Spanish origin, which is degrading. Distributors are doing their best to remedy this, and frequently visit us to check on the development of the plants and give us advice", adds Baioua.

The first harvest peak is expected in January, followed by a second, larger one in March-April. According to Baioua, "The first harvests will be destined for the fresh market, while the March-April harvest will be destined for the frozen sector, which is becoming increasingly important in terms of volumes".
