The Spanish Kaki Association expressed its concern about the serious damage caused by the recent High Isolated Level Depression (DANA) in the province of Valencia, which has severely affected kaki production and caused significant losses in the agricultural sector. "In addition to the material damage, we deeply regret the loss of life and injuries caused by this phenomenon. We convey our heartfelt support and solidarity to the affected families at this difficult time," the association stated.
The impact of this DANA has been devastating for kaki cultivation in Valencia, especially in the areas with the highest production. According to initial estimates, losses have exceeded 70% of the crop in many areas. The torrential rains, accompanied by winds and hail, caused many fruits to fall and considerably damaged the plantations. The sector still hasn't been able to assess 100% of the damage, as many roads are still blocked and several accesses are flooded, making it hard to inspect the affected areas. The damage will affect this season's production and compromise crop yields in the coming years as numerous trees suffered structural injuries that will require time and costly recovery efforts.
"The Spanish Kaki Association calls on the public administrations to immediately implement measures to support the affected farmers. We request direct aid, tax relief, and a specific recovery plan for kaki producers, a crop that has become an economic and cultural pillar of the Valencian region. We also call for a firm commitment from the authorities to improve drainage and protection infrastructures in agricultural areas to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events, which are increasingly frequent due to climate change."
The association also reaffirmed its commitment to the farmers and producers who have dedicated their lives and efforts to the production of this fruit. "In these difficult times, we will work hand in hand with the institutions and the sector to facilitate the recovery of the sector and ensure that the cultivation of kaki continues to be a symbol of quality and tradition for the province of Valencia and the whole of Spain," the Association stated.
