Tajikistan is set to expand its citrus farming by adding over 113 hectares of new citrus orchards as part of its "Development Program for Horticulture and Citrus Farming for 2025-2029." These new orchards will be established in various regions including Sughd, Khatlon, the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, and areas under republican jurisdiction.
Currently, the country has 438 hectares of citrus orchards, which are cultivated in greenhouses, trenches, and semi-trenches to maximize the use of its unique natural resources. Citrus farming is one of the most profitable industries.
The technique of trench cultivation of citrus fruits, developed by Tajik scientists in the 1930s, has been instrumental in the growth of this sector not only in Tajikistan but also in other Central Asian republics. The most suitable regions for citrus cultivation in Tajikistan are the Vakhsh and Gissar valleys, and the Kulob region, particularly the districts of Farkhor, Khamadoni, and Muminabad, which have moderately hot and long summers.
The main challenge for citrus cultivation in the area is the sensitivity of citrus crops to cold, requiring special care and attention.
