Climate change threatens Kashmir’s apple industry

Climate change has significantly impacted Kashmir's agriculture sector, particularly the production of apples and saffron. A noticeable decline in rainfall has adversely affected these key crops. Saffron production has dropped from approximately 16 tons in the 1997-98 season to just 3.48 tons in the 2021-22 season, with the cultivation area shrinking from 5,700 hectares to 3,700 hectares. Extended summer dry spells have been a major factor in reduced yields, as saffron requires adequate rainfall.

The apple industry, which accounts for about 80% of India's apple production and is valued at roughly $960 million, has also faced challenges. Heatwaves and early snowfall have affected apple quality, including size and color, reducing their market value. The horticulture department has reported a decline in the production of premium-quality apples. This highlights the growing impact of climate change on Jammu and Kashmir's agricultural landscape.
