Looking back on California’s grape and stone fruit seasons

With the California table grape and stone fruit seasons behind us, one grower-shipper is reflecting on what they feel was a positive season. "We are grateful to have had another successful California stone fruit and table grape season. The dedication of hard-working teams and the strength of valued partnerships is what makes it all possible," says Kira Navison of Scattaglia Growers & Shippers (SGS).

The company is already gearing up for the 2025 season and looking forward to what's in store. "This year, there were circumstances that created opportunities for growth and an increase in sales for the 2024 California table grape and stone fruit season. The season was challenging but promising with an optimistic outlook for the future," says Navison.

Challenges and new development
SGS continues to grow as it expands its acreage and focuses on having varieties that are increasingly becoming preferred by consumers.

That said, there were still challenges to manage this season. "We faced a couple of weeks with very high temperatures which wasn't ideal for the crop. The economy also kept us on our toes this year. Every season presents itself with different roadblocks but we do our best to adapt quickly and continuously collaborate as a team to keep operations running smoothly. I'm sure that everyone in the produce world could agree that we are all faced with obstacles that are often out of our control. We just have to do what we can to navigate through it. Overall, I think that truly shows the strength and resilience of our industry," says Navison.

The 2024 season also saw a new development for SGS: it began an organic stone fruit program, something that was top of mind when the company exhibited at the Organic Produce Summit in July. "This was an exciting new step for us," says Navison. "We had a wonderful season and we're grateful for the opportunity we've had to contribute to feeding the world for another California table grape and stone fruit season."
