Spain's main agricultural organizations rejected the trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur. If the Spanish government decides to support the agreement, they would mobilize in the coming months, just like French farmers have, they warned. Representatives of Asaja, COAG, UPA, and Unión de Uniones expressed concern about the incompatibility of the agreement with the interests of the agricultural sector, emphasizing the need to establish mirror clauses to ensure that imported products comply with the same European production standards they follow.
Mobilizations against the agreement, which have already taken place in France, could extend to Spain, where the agricultural sector has shown dissatisfaction with the current proposals. Last winter, a wave of mobilizations that began in France spread through the entire European countryside, which organized historic tractor drives for days. The Spanish government responded with a plan of 43 measures, supported by the Unión de Pequeños Agricultores and Unión de Uniones, but not backed by Asaja and COAG.
COAG's Andoni Garcia reiterated the unanimous position of European farmers against the agreement and anticipates more protests if the agreement is signed.
Spanish agricultural organizations have also criticized the actions of French farmers, who have blocked the transit of Spanish goods as they protest the EU-Mercosur agreement, which has nothing to do with the Spanish border.
