In the initial three quarters of 2024, China's importation of durian reached 1.38 million tons, as reported by the Overseas Trade Promotion Office in Guangzhou, solidifying its status as the premier global importer of fruit. This surge in durian demand poses both opportunities and challenges for Thai exporters. Notably, durian consumption in China constituted 91% of the worldwide consumption in 2023, underscoring the market's vast potential for Thailand. Despite Thailand's prominence as a key supplier, increasing competition from other Southeast Asian nations, particularly Vietnam, is evident, with Vietnam's durian exports to China experiencing a 90% year-on-year increase in September.
To safeguard its market share, Thailand is urged to focus on enhancing quality control and standards, addressing issues such as soft durian and pest infestations. Innovating new durian varieties that align with contemporary consumer tastes could also provide Thai durian with a competitive advantage in China's market. The China-Laos railway has notably reduced shipping costs and transit times for Thai durian, enhancing its competitiveness. Nevertheless, with the market nearing saturation, continuous innovation and adaptation are imperative for Thai exporters to sustain their market dominance.
