Positive trend for the garlic campaign but less so for onions

"The Spanish white garlic campaign is showing promising results this year. Compared to last year, current prices have increased by approximately 10-15%, reflecting a marked improvement in product quality compared to the previous season. Market demand is also robust, with positive consumption trends," says Salvatore Del Prete, of the Italian company Pio Del Prete, based in Carinaro, in the province of Caserta.

The Pio Del Prete company is a leading processor and marketer of garlic, onions, shallots, carrots, and nuts. In the current year, the company has handled 300 tonnes of garlic, 2000 tonnes of onions and 50 tonnes of shallots.

Since 2017, the company has also introduced the Bio line of garlic, onion, shallot and carrots, all of which are certified by Bio Agri Cert. This has been done in order to increase food safety and guarantee a high-quality product.

"In regard to the onion campaign, we anticipate that Italian products will be on the market until February or March. The quality has not been optimal due to a climatic trend characterised by high temperatures, which have negatively impacted the quality of the onions, resulting in issues such as blanching and other defects on the bulbs. Consequently, given the current situation and the quality of the produce already on the market as well as the limited quantity of higher-quality produce that has been stored, it is not realistic to expect that we will be able to market home-grown produce until May, as we have been able to do in previous years. Consequently, we will be required to import goods. The Dutch product will be the main supplier this year, as it is of a high quality and has an appropriate gauge (60/80)."

"In terms of sales, onions are currently experiencing a similar trend to that of last year. In terms of consumption, the golden onion is the most popular among Italian consumers, although niche markets, such as the coppered onion from Montoro, are gaining ground on a national scale."

"Our company mission is to enhance the beneficial properties of our product by focusing on quality, not on volumes," Salvatore Del Prete concludes.
