The shipping giant CMA CGM has announced a €40 million investment to enhance the Lyon–Port of Fos-sur-Mer (Marseille) river route. This initiative aims to strengthen freight transport along the Rhône and could potentially double the volume of container freight on the river by 2032, according to Capital. The project aligns with the company's goal to alleviate road congestion and significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
Currently, 80% of goods between Marseille and Lyon are transported by road, while only 5% utilize the Rhône, despite the existing port infrastructure. This highlights the untapped potential of river freight, which could grow considerably without requiring extensive additional investments.
