The Indian government is set to increase bulk onion storage facilities across the country, inspired by the success observed in a pilot project in Sonipat. Managed by Harshna Agro Fresh, the Sonipat site is notable for its application of a controlled atmosphere and cutting-edge technology that mimics dormant field conditions, optimizing onion preservation.
Officials from the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) reported an impressive recovery rate of 88% from the Sonipat project, surpassing other storage methods nationwide. In July 2024, the facility stored 1,900 metric tons of rabi onions from Maharashtra, with distribution commencing in late November.
The facility demonstrated a monthly weight loss of only 2%, without any compromise on quality, a stark contrast to the 30-40% loss typically seen in traditional storage methods. The controlled atmosphere maintains a temperature between 23-26°C, ideal for onion storage, compared to the satisfactory range of 25-30°C in conventional storage.
Subhash Chandra Meena, a DoCA official, emphasized the strategic advantage of situating such facilities near consumer markets to expedite the distribution of subsidized onions during peak demand periods. He contrasted the recovery rates between traditional methods and those employing advanced technology, with the latter achieving up to 93% efficiency.
