Peruvian mango supply improved over last season

The demand for mangoes is good right now and it's expected to improve. "With the new year coming, we always see increased demand on mangoes," says Gary Clevenger of Freska Produce.

As for the supply of mangoes meeting that demand, it is very good out of Peru on the Kent variety, the main variety being shipped until Ataulfo mangoes get started. "We expect this to be the case though January, with lower volumes into February and March," says Clevenger. Meanwhile, Mexico will start its production of Ataulfos, also known as Honey mangoes, in mid-January and red mangoes by mid-February out of southern Mexico.

Outlook on Peru
In all, this is a better picture on mangoes than what was seen last year at this time. "Last year we had issues with El Nino and Peru so the supply was off by close to 80 percent. This year we have a much better supply," says Clevenger, adding that timing this year also looks similar to historical timing.

Between the good supply of Peruvian Kent mangoes and the increased demand expected at the start of the year, pricing is promotable on mangoes.

Looking ahead, it's expected there will be more of the same with Mexico coming on in mid-January in hopefully good weather conditions. "The weather is always our challenge. Good weather will mean plenty of good quality mangos," says Clevenger.
