Malaysia has seen a notable expansion in its pineapple export market, with France and New Zealand being the latest additions to its international clientele. According to Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, chairman of the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board, there was a significant leap in the export volume last year, with shipments rising from 800 to 1,778 containers. This surge underscores the global acceptance of Malaysian pineapples, bolstered by technological advancements that prolong freshness during export.
The value of pineapple exports reached approximately $203 million (RM899 million) by September of the previous year. With the year-end figures pending, the Board anticipates the total export value to surpass $225 million (RM1 billion). This expectation follows a record output of over 100,440 metric tonnes in the same year, surpassing the initial target of 85,000 metric tonnes. The increase in production has been attributed to the expansion of large-scale plantations by various conglomerates.
Furthermore, the area dedicated to pineapple cultivation expanded by 1,674 hectares, totaling 18,275.7 hectares. This growth not only contributes to Malaysia's economy but also promises substantial income for local farmers. Under the 11th Malaysia Plan, the goal is for 80% of pineapple farmers to earn more than $1,125 (RM5,000) monthly, with aspirations to increase this to $1,800 (RM8,000) in the future.
Looking ahead, Sarawak aims to broaden its pineapple plantation area to 20,000 hectares by 2030, following a 228-hectare increase last year. This expansion plan, endorsed by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, positions Sarawak as a key player in meeting Malaysia's ambitious pineapple production and export targets.
