US and Iran report 760,000-ton pistachio supply for 2024, with 30% consumed in first quarter

The total supply of pistachios from the two major producers, the United States and Iran, was reported to be about 760,000 tons in September 2024. The share of the American pistachio industry is about 530,000 tons and the share of Iran is 230,000 tons of this amount.

It is worth noting that the pistachio trading year for the United States begins each year at the beginning of September and for Iranian pistachios, it begins at the 22nd of September.
In the new marketing year, the US pistachio industry produced about 480,000 tons and Iran about 200,000 tons of marketable pistachios; in addition, the carryover inventory from the previous marketing year to this year was about 50,000 tons for US pistachios and about 30,000 tons for Iran.

This report presents the performance of the first three months of the 1403 crop year for American and Iranian pistachios.

In this quarter, the US pistachio industry supplied about 146,000 tons of its product, with the US domestic market share of about 28,000 tons and the export destination share of about 117,000 tons. During this period, the US sent about 73,000 tons of pistachios to the Asian region, mainly China, Vietnam, India, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Taiwan. European destinations received about 28,000 tons of US pistachios, mainly Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, United Kingdom, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. In addition, US pistachio exports to regions of the Middle East and Africa totaled about 12,000 tons, with the share of destinations such as Turkey, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel being more significant than the rest of the countries.

But what has happened to Iranian pistachios over the past three months is that about 91,000 tons of the 230,000 tons stock at the beginning of the crop year has been supplied. Of this amount, about 83,000 tons have been exported, and it is estimated that about 8,000 tons have been supplied to the domestic market.

The main export destinations of Iranian pistachios in these three months were the Far East, mainly China and Hong Kong, with 32 thousand tons; the Indian subcontinent, mainly including India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, with 12 thousand tons; the Commonwealth countries, mainly including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia, with 12 thousand tons; and re-export markets, including Turkey and the UAE, with 12 thousand tons. Also, Iranian pistachio exports to the Middle East were about 4 thousand tons, mainly including Iraq, and 1 thousand tons to the European Union countries, mainly including Germany.

At the end of the quarter, the US pistachio industry's inventory balance was estimated at 390,000 tons, while Iran's pistachio inventory balance was estimated at 140,000 tons of dried pistachios in the shell. Therefore, about 30 percent of the inventory available at the beginning of the year from the two major producers has been consumed, and 530,000 tons of the total 760,000 tons can be supplied over the next nine months.
