Ulrich Boisnay, Les Halles du Verger

"I am convinced that more work should be done on tropical avocados"

During the festive season, wholesaler Les Halles du Verger, which celebrated its 1st anniversary last September, is putting the spotlight on exotic products. Ulrich Boisnay, manager of Les Halles du Verger, looks back at the (short-lived) campaigns of tropical avocados and chocolate oranges. While the latter managed to hold its own over the festive period, the exotic range failed to sparkle this year. "Unsurprisingly, with higher prices due to inflation and low purchasing power, the sales of off-season exotic fruit were significantly lower than in previous years."

The chocolate orange continues to gain in popularity
Recognizable by its brown colour, the chocolate orange is becoming increasingly popular. Marketed during the Christmas period, this young variety from Spain, produced for less than ten years, continues to grow in popularity, especially in supermarkets. "Today, virtually all the traditional retail chains stock it on their shelves during the festive season. The sales period is always very short, and this year was no exception, with demand increasing every year." Chocolate oranges are all the rage during the last two months of the year, mainly thanks to its unusual colour. According to Ulrich Boisnay, "there is otherwise not much difference between a chocolate orange and a classic orange in terms of taste, apart from the fact that it is slightly juicier. Its appeal is mainly visual, as it adds a touch of originality to Christmas tables."

Tropical avocados: an underestimated product
Les Halles du Verger's December range also includes tropical avocados from the Dominican Republic. According to Ulrich, this is an underestimated product, given its specific characteristics. "It is a creamier, more fragrant avocado than the traditional one. It does not usually weigh more." It is a niche product that could well gain market share in the years to come. "I am convinced that there is work to be done all year round for this avocado, given its qualities and its ever-increasing consumption."
