Ri6 Durian gaining popularity in Canada and beyond

Supplies of Durian coming into Canada are steady as demand for the unique fruit increases ahead of the Lunar New Year later this month. "Supply of the Ri6 variety of Durian right now is out of Vietnam–it's available annually," says Brian Boccia of TSI Tropicals, adding that it's been importing Ri6 for the past two years. "The Monthong Durian out of Thailand has spot shipments available now for Lunar New Year and their season starts up again in April."

While the supply of the spiky fruit with custard-like flesh on the inside looks similar to last year at this time–TSI Tropicals is importing about eight tonnes per week right now–the demand for the fruit is increasing. "It's a good variety of Durian at a good price. We've also helped the growers with picking them and they're picking only tree-ripened fruit," says Boccia.

Variety gaining popularity
What is challenging to manage is finding the airspace to ship the fruit into Canada, not to mention other countries also developing a growing interest in the Ri6 variety particularly.

At the same time, beyond traditional ethnic consumers of Durian fruit, the item is also gaining ground on social media as the "smelly" fruit. "I believe if the price point becomes available, more people are willing to try it," adds Boccia.

Pricing is strong for the fruit right now given the high demand ahead of the Lunar New Year, though those prices are expected to soften into February and March.
