Vietnam's durian imports hit $11.8 million in 2024, exports soar to $3.3 billion

In the initial 11 months of the previous year, Vietnam's investment in durian imports reached VND300 billion (US$11.8 million), marking a sixfold rise from the corresponding period in 2023, with Thailand and Malaysia being the primary suppliers. The month of November saw an 11-fold increase in durian import expenditure, totaling $3 million. The preference among Vietnamese consumers, particularly those from middle-income brackets, leans towards the smaller-sized durians sourced from Thailand. On the other hand, the frozen Musang King durians imported from Malaysia are esteemed for their uniform quality, finding their use predominantly in the creation of high-end pastry items.

Dang Phuc Nguyen, the general secretary of the Vietnam Fruits and Vegetables Association, highlighted the obstacles faced by local farmers in cultivating the Musang King variety, attributing the difficulties to adverse weather conditions and technical constraints. This has led to a shift towards cultivating other durian varieties that promise higher yields. Despite the upsurge in durian imports, Vietnam's achievements in durian exports remain noteworthy. In 2024, the export value of durians from Vietnam escalated to $3.3 billion, registering a growth of over $1 billion from the year prior and constituting nearly half of the nation's total revenue from fruit and vegetable exports.

The goal for the current year is to elevate durian exports to $3.5 billion, aiming for a cumulative fruit and vegetable export revenue of $8 billion. This bilateral trade activity not only enriches the domestic market variety but also propels Vietnam's durian industry towards a more pronounced global presence.
