Strawberries in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany increasingly under cover

The area of strawberries under cover (such as under a glass greenhouse or plastic tunnel) is growing in the Netherlands. In this, strawberry cultivation in the Netherlands is not unique. Covered strawberry cultivation is also becoming increasingly important in neighboring countries. The total strawberry production of these three countries has not changed much over the past decade and is around 250 million kilograms, Rabobank shows using figures.

Meanwhile, almost 55% of the combined production of these three countries is from covered cultivation and 45% from outdoor cultivation. In addition, production from covered cultivation has grown particularly strongly in the Netherlands. Outdoor cultivation in Germany has declined sharply and outdoor crops in the Netherlands and Belgium have increasingly switched from strawberry production to the cultivation of planting material.
