Ruth Palomero, of Orangen frisch nach Hause (Naranjas de Cullera)

"During the pandemic, consumption of organic oranges increased a lot and, despite the current drop, we are confident that it will pick up again"

Germany, which is the largest European customer of Spanish oranges, as well as the largest market for organic products in the EU, recently held a new edition of Biofach. The event was attended by companies specializing in organic citrus, such as Naranjas de Cullera, which took Spain's most sustainable supply to Nuremberg.

"This is the first time we have attended Biofach and we found it very interesting," says Ruth Palomero, from the Valencian company known in Germany by the brand Orangen frisch nach Hause. "Our way of marketing is a bit special because we are not wholesalers; we sell directly to the end consumer, so at the fair, we have been able to establish certain synergies not only with potential clients but also with other companies and organic product stores with whom we may work in the future."

"As far as the production is concerned, we've obtained a greater volume than initially expected, with calibers in line with those of previous years; however, while consumption has stabilized somewhat in the conventional segment, this year we have noticed a certain drop in organic demand," says Ruth.

"That's why we decided to come to Biofach, because we wanted to reach more stores and chains specializing in organic products willing to work with us; companies involved in the economy of the common good, and that are committed to social justice and sustainability. Our costs can never be those of the warehouses that handle large volumes for large-scale distribution, and neither can our prices, but we can offer complete reliability, a close and transparent treatment, and a product that reaches consumers in a matter of hours or just a couple of days after being harvested," says Ruth. "Our products are grown in a completely natural way, without any chemicals and with respect for environmental balance."

"I remember that a lot of organic oranges were sold in pandemic times, and, in fact, that was a time when our company grew significantly. There has certainly been a fall in consumption, but I am confident that, despite the circumstances of recent years, organic fruit and vegetable consumption will pick up again, because, in addition to being the healthiest option, prices are also increasingly competitive."
