Richard Strijbis, Tovano:

"I've never had dried figs this expensive, yet they’re selling well"

At Tovano, the Turkish season for dried figs has been underway for some time, but availability remains limited. "The harvest hasn't been this poor in years. As a result, we've never had figs this expensive. Prices are around 10 euros per kilo—really far too expensive for what they are—but they're still selling smoothly," says Richard Strijbis.

Nevertheless, the nut and dried fruit trader is concerned about the rising costs across the range. "Whether it's figs, dates, almonds, or walnuts, almost all the products we offer have become significantly more expensive in recent years. You start to wonder where it will end. I remember when fig prices were just 3–4 euros per kilo. For now, though, this hasn't led to a drop in consumption. People are much more conscious about their food choices these days, and our range fits that trend perfectly—but consumers still need to be able to afford it."

Additionally, Richard notes a growing year-round demand for nuts and southern fruits. "In the past, there were clear peaks and quieter periods. That's no longer the case. With Ramadan approaching, we're seeing an increase in demand again. While it's important not to focus solely on Ramadan, it does bring a noticeable surge in demand from the ethnic market. It's similar to Christmas for the Dutch—many people may not attend church, but the festive season still brings increased consumption. The same applies to many Muslims during Ramadan."

Dried persimmons

In addition to dried figs—available whole, chopped, or ready-to-eat from Turkey—Tovano will also offer minifigs from Spain in the coming months. "It's a completely different segment, but there's a market for that too," Richard notes. Furthermore, the Maasdijk-based company has expanded its South African dried fruit range, which focuses on natural sugars, by adding dried persimmons. "It's not the biggest product, but it's incredibly tasty and a great addition to our range."
