Greenhouse production in Switzerland adapts to market and ecological demands

In Switzerland, greenhouse vegetable production continues to evolve with the adoption of new technologies and collaborative strategies. Les Champs du Loup S.A. is a prime example of this transition, having grown from a four-generation family farm into a joint-stock company in 2023.

"We grow tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, lettuce, and various types of squash, which we supply directly to our producer cooperative, Union Maraîchère de Genève (UMG). UMG is committed to offering a diverse range of products to meet customer demand," explains Véronique Magnin from the company.

Over time, open-field production has given way to greenhouse cultivation and, more recently, soilless systems to better manage climate challenges and meet yield expectations. Despite these advancements, production remains focused on the Swiss market, with pricing adapted to local conditions.

The key challenge remains economic viability while meeting environmental requirements. To optimize costs, producers benefit from shared commercial and packaging services through UMG. "There is still room to grow in the market, but mastering production costs is crucial," says Véronique. "The demand for locally grown products remains strong, providing opportunities for growers who adjust their strategies accordingly."

Currently, Les Champs du Loup is looking for an assistant grower. Click here to view the job offer.
