AKT Trading recalls vegetable products over botulism risk

AKT Trading Inc., based in Torrance, California, has issued a recall for several prepared vegetable products manufactured by Choshiya Honten Co., Ltd. due to a potential risk of Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause life-threatening illness or death. The recall was prompted by the absence of a "Keep Refrigerated" statement on the packaging, which could lead to hazardous bacterial growth if stored at room temperature. Consumers are strongly advised not to consume these products, even if they do not appear spoiled, and are urged to discard or return them for a full refund.

Botulism is a severe form of food poisoning that can cause general weakness, dizziness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, trouble breathing, muscle weakness, abdominal distension, and constipation. The condition can be fatal, and anyone experiencing symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

The affected products were distributed at Tokyo Central and Marukai Market stores across California, including locations in Gardena, Cupertino, Los Angeles, San Diego, Costa Mesa, West Covina, Yorba Linda, and Torrance.

The recalled products are packaged in plastic bags and include Shiba Zuke Prepared Mix Vegetables (1lb) with an expiration date of August 27, 2025, Aokappa Zuke Prepared Mix Vegetables (1lb) with an expiration date of May 14, 2025, Fukushin Zuke Prepared Mix Vegetables (1lb) with expiration dates of July 9, 2025, and May 31, 2025, Soft Tsubozuke Prepared Mix Vegetables (1lb) with an expiration date of July 29, 2025, Rakkyo Zuke Prepared Vegetables (1lb) with expiration dates of August 1, 2025, and July 1, 2025, and Abura-Itame Zhasai Prepared Sichuan Vegetable (8.8oz) with expiration dates of April 3, 2025, and February 25, 2025. No illnesses have been reported to date.

The issue was first discovered on February 18, 2025, at a Tokyo Central/Marukai retail store. The missing refrigeration label raised concerns that improper storage could create conditions favorable for bacterial growth. The affected products were immediately removed from sale at that location. AKT Trading Inc. is urging consumers who purchased any of the recalled products with the listed expiration dates to not consume them. Customers can return the items to the place of purchase for a full refund.

AKT Trading Inc. emphasized that it is committed to maintaining the safety and quality of its products. The recall is being conducted out of an abundance of caution, and the company is cooperating fully with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in addressing the issue. Consumers with questions or concerns about the recall are advised to contact the retailer where the product was purchased.
