Henk van der Meij, Hars&Hagebauer:

"Mango sales recover from slump"

After a difficult 2024, consumers finally have mangoes back in their shopping baskets. High prices and limited availability had pushed mangoes somewhat into the background. "When supermarkets are also cautious with promotions, it can lead to a drop in sales of sometimes tens of percent," says Henk van der Meij of Hars & Hagebauer. "This year is different. Thanks to a relatively good harvest in Peru, mangoes have been featured frequently in promotional campaigns throughout the season, with some German retailers even offering them at very competitive prices."

"With the season in Peru coming to an end, we're now looking ahead to the West African season. Fortunately, an early start and a good harvest are also expected there. So there will be plenty of fruit and plenty of opportunities for promotions," says the fruit importer, which considers West Africa one of its areas of expertise. "It's a continent that requires the necessary know-how. Obviously, the cost comes before the benefit here, so you really need to know what you're doing."

"We'll be traveling again soon to visit the relevant regions and our long-standing partners. That's part of the job. It's always a people business. After the traditional kick-off in Côte d'Ivoire, we'll move on to Mali and then Senegal. We look ahead with confidence to what's coming. There are always some ups and downs—after all, we're talking about mangoes," the fruit importer concludes.
