Although less well-known than dry dates, fresh dates seem to gradually find their audience. Nueva Vista is currently launching a campaign for fresh Barhi dates from Peru, an origin that is still new to the French market.
"At this time of year, Peru is the only country to export significant volumes of fresh dates"
Alongside the Medjool date, which needs no introduction, Nueva Vista also offers Barhi dates. The Barhi, also known as the fresh date or trendy yellow date, "is a specific variety, renowned for its caramel and honey notes that come out as it ripens," explains William Burunat, founder of Nueva Vista. "We work with the Peru origin from the end of February until the beginning of June. From August onwards, we will switch to the Israel origin."
Peruvian dates are the latest arrival on the French market and they have been growing in volume and popularity. "Peru has now been producing dates for approximately 10 years. At this time of year, it is the only country in the world that can export fresh dates in any volume! Although the size is smaller than the Israeli Barhi, it is an interesting origin, not only because of its seasonal nature but also because of its high sugar content."
Volumes were very limited at the start of the season, but availability should now be more favorable. "Sales are very fluid at the moment, with volumes still insufficient to meet the demand, but production is set to increase in the coming weeks. We are one of the three panelists for the Athos brand on the French market, our historic Peruvian partner!"
Once yellow, the Barhi date turns brown as it ripens. The sugar then comes out, giving it a honeyed appearance. The Peruvian origin is packaged in parcels of 2 or 4.5 kg, while the Israeli origin is packaged in parcels of 5 kg.
More and more people are eating dates
The consumption of dried and fresh dates is gradually becoming more mainstream in France. "Consumption peaks during the festive season. This year, we started the Peruvian campaign at the beginning of Ramadan. It will be followed by the Israeli campaign at the end of the summer, which will enable us to supply the market during the Jewish festivities."
Dates are gradually gaining a wider audience. "Even if Barhi dates remain a niche product, more and more volumes are being consumed all year round, as shown by the growing interest in the product among multi-fruit chains."
