Egyptian exporter: "We see a surge in demand from Russia, Asian markets, and the UK"

The export map for Egyptian fresh potatoes reshaped this season

The Egyptian fresh potato export landscape is undergoing a significant transformation this season, marked by a notable resurgence in Russian demand, continued growth in Asian and Far East markets, and a sharp increase in imports from the United Kingdom. This is according to Yassen Abdelhay, export advisor for Arafa for Export and Development. Abdelhay adds, "This shift reflects Egypt's robust production capabilities and strategic positioning as a reliable global supplier."

Abundant potato production in Egypt
The shift in potato flows in the global market is a result of shortages in many primary origins, while Egyptian production remains consistent. Abdelhay says, "Egypt's potato production is currently characterized by ample volume and exceptional quality, ensuring a consistent supply. Fresh-season potatoes are readily available from January until June, with cold storage extending availability to October. This extended period caters to diverse market needs, offering a wide range of varieties suitable for table consumption, French fry production, and the crisps industry.

"Furthermore, Egyptian potatoes have successfully penetrated numerous new markets in Asia. Despite the challenges of long transit times, Egyptian potatoes arrive in excellent condition, offering competitive prices during the crucial June to October period. This achievement underscores Egypt's ability to navigate logistical complexities and deliver quality produce to distant markets," the exporter continues.

"Russian demand for Egyptian potatoes increased dramatically this season"
A major shift in the potato trade map this season is the resurrection of Russian demand, according to Abdelhay. He explains, "While Russia has historically relied on Egyptian potatoes, last season witnessed a 50% decrease in trade volume between the two nations. However, this season presents a starkly different picture. Russia has significantly opened its market for potato imports, with expectations of a staggering 400% increase compared to the previous year. This surge is attributed to challenging harvest conditions in Russia during 2024, stemming from adverse weather and limited access to high-quality seeds, resulting in a 14% annual production decline.

"We are poised to capitalize on this increased demand, solidifying our position as a key supplier of fresh potatoes to Russia. Russian demand for Egyptian potatoes increased dramatically this season, and we anticipate that Egypt will secure the largest share of this import growth," Abdelhay assures.

Significant growth in the United Kingdom's market
In addition to the burgeoning markets in Russia and Asia, the United Kingdom has also witnessed a dramatic increase in its imports of Egyptian potatoes in recent years according to the exporter. He says, "Traditionally, Cyprus has been one of the key potato suppliers to the UK. However, this year, Cyprus has experienced significant losses in its potato production due to frost. This situation creates a substantial opportunity for Egyptian exporters to fill the supply gap and further strengthen their presence in the UK market. The UK's increasing reliance on Egyptian produce further diversifies Egypt's export portfolio and strengthens its global presence. "

Asia and the Far East
Abdelhay: "In parallel with the Russian and UK market surges, Egypt is committed to expanding its market share in Asia and the Far East. The availability of high-quality potatoes, coupled with efficient storage capabilities, ensures a consistent and reliable supply to these regions. This commitment to quality and consistency reinforces Egypt's reputation as a dependable global exporter.

The exporter continues, "The reshaping of Egypt's fresh potato export map reflects its adaptability and resilience in a dynamic global market. By leveraging its production capabilities and strategic advantages, Egypt is well-positioned to meet the growing demands of international markets. As Russia's demand rebounds, Asian markets continue to expand, and the UK market strengthens, Egypt remains a vital and trusted partner in the international potato trade."

He concludes, "At Arafa Group, we are a leading grower and exporter of high-quality Egyptian potatoes. We specialize in supplying potatoes ideal for processing into chips and French fries. Our extensive experience in exporting to countries such as Spain, Italy, Belgium, Croatia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Lebanon, Iraq, Malaysia, Jordan, and others, coupled with our commitment to quality and compliance, has made us a trusted supplier to global brands like PepsiCo in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq.
