In February, Peru exported 17,799 tons of fresh onions for $7.69 million. The export volume increased by 11% but the value decreased by 6% due to a 15.5% drop in the average price, which stood at $0.43 per kilogram.
Spain established itself as the main destination, displacing the United States to second place. 6,116 tons were sent to Spain for $3.14 million, accounting for 41% of the total. The volume increased by 6%, but the value decreased by 3% due to a 9% adjustment in the average price, which stood at $0.51 per kilogram.
The United States imported 5,493 tons for $2.52 million, i.e. 7% less volume and 25% less value. The average price decreased by 19% to $0.46 per kilogram.
Colombia ranked third with 4,713 tons worth $1.32 million. This is 161% more volume and 221% more value than in February 2024. The average price in Colombia increased by 23% and stood at $0.28 per kilogram.
Lower prices and lower demand in the United States affected the total export value. However, growth in Colombia and stability in Spain suggest a diversification of markets. If this trend continues, exporters could consolidate their presence in emerging markets to reduce dependence on the United States and mitigate price volatility.
