Production and distribution of Sweet Karoline blackberry variety is expanding

Following Berry Fresh's success with high-flavor blueberry varieties, the varietal development of blackberries is now also showing significant growth. Through constant trialing and investing in new high-flavor varieties, their genetics portfolio is being pushed into a more flavorful future. "This is very positive, the blackberry category needs consistently delicious varieties to help increase consumption," says Laudan Chaffin with Berry Fresh. "Right now, the blackberry has the lowest household penetration of all four berries." About four years ago, Berry Fresh launched the Sweet Karoline® variety. "We've been witnessing the success and believe that a consistently sweet variety like this has the ability to increase consumption."

Expanding the season
Sweet Karoline is grown in the states of Jalisco and Sinaloa, Mexico from January through June, experiencing significant volume growth year over year. Right now, volumes are strong and will continue into their peak, which is all of April. In an effort to offer Sweet Karoline year-round, Berry Fresh is testing the variety in Oregon. "The plants are going in the ground this spring, but it will take a couple years to understand how they perform in the different regions. Nevertheless, we are feeling positive about their success and hope to expand their season later into summer," Chaffin commented. Depending on the success of the Oregon trials, production may expand into other regions as well.

Consistent, sweet flavor
Consumers are impressed with Sweet Karoline. "The flavor is consistent and not just sweet, but it also has a depth to it." This is a very special berry that has the ability to change minds. Chaffin likes to challenge blackberry consumers who say they don't like blackberries. "Many of us have had a bad blackberry, which can taste quite bad. However, Sweet Karoline's flavor can change that dislike and can change minds. We often hear people say they can't stop eating them until the clamshell is empty. That's music to the ears of a grower and marketer."

Distribution expansion
Sweet Karoline is available through Berry Fresh's distribution centers across the U.S. In addition, the company is shipping to Canada and their parent company's recent merger with the BerryWorld Group in the U.K. will help grow distribution outside North America. "We're looking to expand Sweet Karoline's reach to both the European and Asian markets," Chaffin concluded.
