Garlic cultivation rises in Rangpur as profits grow

Farmers in the Rangpur district in Bangladesh are increasingly engaging in garlic cultivation, with reports indicating financial benefits. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) notes that garlic farming has surpassed its target across all eight upazilas. The crop has been planted on approximately 1,300 hectares, exceeding the initial target of 1,277 hectares.

Md Nazir from Kaunia Upazila shared his experience with The Financial Express, stating, "I now expect to harvest at least 1,008 to 1,045 kg and earn a profit of over $910." Last year, he achieved satisfactory returns from his garlic crop.

Jasim Mia, a farmer in Gangachara Upazila, mentioned, "I have cultivated garlic on 0.13 hectares of land this season. The demand for the crop in the market is high, and its price is also higher." He anticipates a yield of 40 to 45 maunds with a profit of approximately $1,460.

Due to profitable returns, Jasim Mia has reduced the cultivation of traditional crops like paddy, jute, and wheat in favor of garlic. He noted that many local farmers are also showing interest in garlic farming.

Reaz Uddin, Deputy Director of Rangpur DAE, stated that garlic's higher market price and yield are contributing to its growing popularity. The DAE is supporting growers with advice and the necessary resources to boost garlic production.
