Mango packaging with QR code launched in India, enhancing traceability for consumers

Superplum unveiled its new mango packaging solution, designed to elevate food safety, traceability, and consumer confidence. "Our latest innovation in packaging features individual mangoes sealed in tamperproof pouches, with scannable QR codes. Backed by India's most modern supply chain, we continue to get our mangoes to the consumers in the very best state they can be," said Manasvi Khandelia, Manager of Sales Planning at Superplum.

According to Khandelia, the Indian mango market has long grappled with mis-selling with incorrect sourcing information and the use of harmful ripening agents like carbides. "Our new approach tackles these problems head-on. Our mango sourcing spans over eight states and includes eleven premium mango varieties. With our digital supply chain, Superplum ensures full traceability and quality control from farm to retail. Each mango is ripened safely in the company's advanced facilities, free from unsafe chemicals, and sealed in a pilfer-proof pouch to guarantee it reaches consumers untampered and authentic."

Looking at the mango season itself, Khandelia feels the weather is hurting both size and production: "We're experiencing a lack of rain in the south, where the early season mangoes are harvested, which hurts the fruit size and production. However, product quality is good. The production of mangoes in the northern region is looking good. Safe ripening is a prevalent issue as most mangoes are ripened using potentially harmful chemicals that can come in direct contact with fruits."

Identifying where a mango comes from and which variety it actually is has become more challenging, as certain varieties are now grown in several regions, Khandelia emphasizes. "India has famous varieties that are historically prized from specific sourcing locations, such as Ratnagiri Alphonsos, Malihabad Dasheris, and Jardaloo. However, as multiple varieties grow in multiple regions now, consumers find it difficult to get original and authentic varieties. Our packaging, containing a QR code, helps identify the authenticity for the consumers."

"By scanning the QR code on each pouch, customers can verify the mango's origin, view pesticide test results, and confirm they're enjoying genuine Indian varieties, eliminating doubts caused by misidentification or misleading labeling. The mango industry has been plagued by inconsistency and safety concerns for too long. Our packaging and supply chain expertise ensure that consumers get exactly what they pay for: safe, authentic, and delicious mangoes. The mango pouches are now available in retail stores across Delhi and Bangalore!" Khandelia concludes.
