How did the EU's three largest tomato suppliers fare in the last decade?

An analysis by Hortoinfo of the EU's three main tomato suppliers' productions, exports, and sales in the EU between 2014 and 2023 shows that Spain was the largest producer, the Netherlands was the largest supplier outside its territory, and Morocco overtook Spain in exports in the last two years (although it maintains the second position by sales in the EU).

The yield figures come from FAO's statistical agency Faostat, the export figures from Comtrade and the UN Statistics Department, and data from Eurostacom (ICEX-Eurostat) was used to analyze sales within EU countries. The analysis is limited to 2023 because Faostat and Comtrade still don't have 2024 figures for Morocco.

In terms of yield, Spain and the Netherlands have experienced a decline, while Morocco has shown an increase. In 2014, Spain produced 4,888 million kilos, 443.2% more than the Netherlands and 297.16% more than Morocco. In 2023, Spain produced 3,968.46 million kilos, 446.62% more than the Netherlands and 174.69% more than Morocco.

Looking at the percentage of the harvest intended for export, thanks to its re-export model, the Netherlands exported more than it harvested itself (125.17%) in 2013. In 2014, the Netherlands exported 1,126.5 million kilos, and in 2023, 864.96 million kilos (119.14% compared to its production). Its sales in the EU were 98.44% of what was produced in 2023.

Spain went from exporting 967.54 million kilos in 2014 (19.79% of its production) to 658.72 million kilos in 2023, i.e., 16.6% of its production. Spain sold 12.68% of its production in the EU in 2023.

Morocco increased its exports from 39.43% of its production in 2014 to 45.6% of its production, or 658.75 million kilos, in 2023. Sales in the EU accounted for 34.09% of its production in 2023.
