Supply deal boosts Canarian plantain production and distribution

Orsero, a Mediterranean European company involved in the import and distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables, has signed a new agreement to strengthen its role in the Canarian plantain supply chain. The deal was made between Hermanos Fernández Lopez ("Fernández"), Orsero's Spanish subsidiary, and Cooperativas Unidas de la Palma ("Cupalma"), one of the largest agricultural cooperatives in the Canary Islands and the largest on the island of La Palma.

The agreement formalises and expands a commercial relationship that began in 1988. Its goal is to optimise coordination between the production and distribution phases of PGI-certified Canarian plantains. Based on last year's volumes, the agreement is expected to involve the production and distribution of approximately 280,000 tons of plantains over its duration, with a projected value exceeding €300 million.

Under the agreement, the more than 2,000 farmers represented by Cupalma will have access to Orsero's Spanish ripening facility, which has a capacity of 135,000 tons annually. They will also benefit from the company's distribution infrastructure in Spain, which includes access to major ports and international links to Portugal, France, Italy, and Greece.

Fernández will manage the distribution of over 42,000 tons of PGI-certified Canarian plantains produced annually by Cupalma's members, bringing its total trading volume in Canarian plantains to around 90,000 tons. This accounts for roughly 20% of total Canarian plantain production.

According to Fernández CEO Feliciano Freiria, the agreement aims to improve coordination along the supply chain and increase efficiency and commercial capacity, with the intention of supporting producers and stabilising market access within Europe.
