Egyptian garlic season in full swing

"Demand for fresh dry garlic is also rather high"

There has been solid demand for the various garlic from Egypt, says Amro Yassin of Egyptian produce exporter Stars of Export: "The season for Egyptian green garlic started out good, and the demand required big quantities compared to the previous season. However, due to problems with the lines for sea freight and chaos caused by vessel delays, export quantities were affected. That being said, we're still in the midst of the green garlic season and are preparing the dried garlic simultaneously."

© Nick Peters | FreshPlaza.comThe production of garlic has been higher this season, and there are sufficient large sizes available, Yassin explains. "Looking at the strength of the current demand, we can see there is still good interest for green garlic. The demand for fresh dry garlic is also rather high in countries such as Brazil, Italy, Spain, the UK, and Taiwan, among others. Thankfully, the production has also been better than it was last year, with high quality, no damage to the produce and an abundance of large sizes."

According to Yassin, prices for garlic have been a bit higher, but not to a point where they'd no longer be competitive: "When it comes to the prices for the garlic, there has been a slight increase when comparing the prices to those of last year, but we're still able to compete thanks to the quality as well as a satisfying price level overall. Prices may still increase due to the increased demand, we can expect an uptick in the price around mid-April."

"For Stars of Export, our main markets are mainly found in Europe, such as Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, the UK and others, but we also export to Australia, Brazil, Canada, UK, South Africa and Taiwan. For the remainder of the season, we expect the demand for green garlic to increase, while the demand for fresh dry garlic should grow around mid-April," Yassin concludes.
