The Lagos State Government has reopened the Ketu fruit market after its closure due to non-compliance with environmental laws. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, announced the reopening following an inspection of the Lagos Island regeneration project.
Wahab stated that the market, sealed on Thursday, was reopened after traders cleaned it overnight, demonstrating compliance. He emphasized, "Market is the first point of contact for most people. Once the cleaning of those markets is done, we will unseal them."
He noted that abatement notices had been issued multiple times without compliance. "People cannot continue to be recalcitrants and forget that the government will enforce them," Wahab added. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is actively involved, supporting PSP operators where they face challenges.
Additionally, Wahab instructed the removal of illegal structures on the drainage channel of King Ado High School on Ojo Giwa. Addressing recent flooding concerns, Wahab assured residents that measures were in place to manage floods effectively. The urban regeneration project aims to resolve flooding in areas such as Adeniji, Oroyinyin, Idumagbo, and others.
The Commissioner reiterated the Ministry's commitment to advocacy against the use of styrofoam, asserting that enforcement and sanctions will follow non-compliance. Regarding flood warnings issued by the Federal Government, Wahab urged residents not to panic, affirming that Lagos State is prepared for the annual occurrence.
