Peru started this year's mango campaign with a very good prognosis and with remarkable volumes, when compared to other years. While these predictions have been accurate, in recent weeks there's been an overproduction in the country, and in neighboring countries, that has saturated the market and complicated the campaign, as prices in Europe have decreased.
Additionally, an unexpected drought in the producing areas is hurting the production and affecting the harvest. "Fearing that these conditions can affect the fruit's quality, many producers with little experience have reacted with a slight panic and decided to send their fruit as soon as possible to its destinations," said Christian Pereda, of Tropical Farm.
"Right now we see this has generated an oversupply in Europe and in the United States. Many exporters forget that we are not the only ones that are shipping large volumes to this markets. Ecuador, for example, is entering this market with great force and they have had a good harvest this year. In recent weeks Europe has received more than 400 containers of fruit," said the spokesman.
According to producers this is an abnormal year regarding harvest and market issues. "We believe prices will stabilize next week because the stocks of mango will start running out in Europe, so we will be able to start sending our fruit under the right market conditions."
