Spain: Moroccan tomatoes cause drop on Canary Islands tomato
In that sense, he explained that "the good track" of the harvest, that had "quite good" prices since February, quoting 7 Euro per 6 kilos, didn't last long for tomato producers in the Canary Islands, due to new "massive" shipments from Morocco.
In the public report, they assure that this fact "caused a drastic drop of 2 to 3 Euro per bunch, presently quoting the Canary Islands tomato in 4.5 Euro to 5.5 Euro".
For Fedex, this situation "makes it necessary to change urgently, the entrance price system and the contingency controls" assigned to Morocco, in order to "avoid destabilization in the European markets as "continuously happens".
Underlining that Morocco exports "20% more than in the last harvest", they complain that if the tendency continues, by the end of the campaign they could have introduced 400,000 tons against the designated 225,000 tons of the present association agreement.
For the Fedex representative, Roberto Goiriz, it's an unsustainable situation for the Canary sector, so they insist in a petition for the Ministry of Agriculture to pressure the European Commission to change the regulation of entrance prices and contingency.
