Germany: Almost 75% of the berries originate from own country

In Germany the berry season starts in June, during which the German consumer prefers products from their own region. Almost 75% of the berries that are sold in Germany, come from their own country, states the German press agency for vegetables and fruits.

In the past year, the German consumers have purchased 4.589 tons of red berries and 3.697 tons of raspberries. “Generally, the red berries are still clustered when they are sold. This is the reason why their optimal freshness is maintained during transit.

However, raspberries do not keep well as they bruise easily. Therefore, it is advisable to consume them if possible on the day of the purchase. Raspberries are full of vitamin C, B1 and B2. In addition, they contain iron and fibres, as well as numerous valuable minerals, such as potassium, calcium and phosphorus.
