Brazilian fruit exports lost value in 2012

The Brazilian foreign trade in fresh fruit was influenced by the economic crisis in 2012. The export did increase in volume, but lagged behind the previous year in value, reports the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website.

In 2012 around 693,000 tonnes of fresh fruit worth 619 million American dollars were exported from Brazil. Whilst the export amount increased by almost 2% compared to 2011, the value of the exported wares decreased by 2.2%. The fact that the larger amount of export did not transform into more profit can be blamed on the worldwide economic crisis and the recession in many important destination countries. This pressured the prices.

Holland was the most important buyer of fresh fruit from Brazil in 2012. 42% of the total export amount went there. After Holland came Great Britain (20%) and Spain (10%) in the list of main buyers. The US, Germany, Argentina, Portugal and France complete this list of main buyers of Brazilian fruit.
