Germany: Berries on the rise

According to information from the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) berries are a growing market in Germany. The cultivation area of berries in Germany was extended by 15% to 6,730 hectares in the last 7 years. The cultivation of blueberries clearly grew. Almost half of the berry area in Germany is focussed in Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg.

Due to the extension of the growing area, the berry harvest has also increased in the last few years. In 2012, 27,000 tonnes of berries were harvested according to figures from the German Bureau of Statistics. At the same time the import of berries to Germany also increased. According to current programs, Germany has imported around 38,200 tonnes of berries in 2012. This is almost 8% more than ten years ago.

It was mainly raspberries and blue berries that were imported in larger numbers. As the import has grown more than the domestic production in recent years, the degree of self catering has declined. The purchasing amount of the German households, however, has constantly grown in recent years. In 2012, 650 grams of berries were bought on average per household.
