Peru: Minneola season underway, avocado to continue for another month
Diana Sajami Tavára, director of FCE Export SAC in Peru reports to have started the season for Minneolas.
The season for satsumas was only very short for the company and Peru in general. There was less fruit available and the internal market paid very good prices.
Still the company had their hands full with the export of avocado. This year the volumes of Hass avocado came a bit later and were relatively small sized in the beginning. Now more fields are coming into production with the better sizes for the retail organizations.
The field prices which were under pressure due to the high volumes in small sizes are now stabilizing. For the popular sizes still quite high prices have to be paid.
FCE Export SAC is exporting the avocado under the brand “Daleska” and expects to continue the season for another month.
Now the efforts of the company are doubled because the start of the Minneola season. This season started slightly earlier than last year and due to the good market for easy peelers a number of exporters took the risk by sending the fruit de-greened.
Ms. Sajami said not wanting to take this risk and will only send the natural colored fruit.
It is still hard to find a national crop forecast but looking in the first harvesting region the crop seems to be some 30% smaller than last year.
This season also less producer / exporters will send their fruit to Europe without having clear programs with their clients. Last year due to many “adventures” the results for the growers was very poor.
All this in mind and with the good demand for easy peelers in Europe Ms. Sajami expects a successful season for Minneola. After this the citrus season will be continued with Malvaceous and Murcotts.
