Richard Kruijer, Tuindersbelang:

"Cabbage export flourishes with a slightly lower price"

Large volumes of white and red cabbage are being exported at the moment. "Prices rose at the end of last week, now they have gone down a little again. The demand for the Danish (white) cabbage was minimal at a price of 16 cents, but now we are around 13 cents and a good demand has been created," says Richard Kruijer of Tuindersbelang from Warmenhuizen, who is active in the mediation of red and white cabbage. "Because the prices of the red cabbage are good, people want to chop it up. This is why the sales of the larger sizes are better than those of the smaller sizes."

"Western Europe is always on the market at this time, but there is also demand from Poland, Croatia, Czech Republic and Italy at the moment. And those countries aren't usually on the market at this time of year," continues Richard. "How the market will develop depends largely on the export. It isn't easy to judge what the cultivation is like in those countries, but if the rumours are to be believed there is shortage and we're profiting from it."

"We are now in the middle of the season with the early Danish variety and it would be good if they could be finished before the storage cabbage. There have been enough years in which it was stored and that produced a bulldozer effect. Now it's looking like it wont bulldozer, so we're heading in the right direction," Richard laughs. "But I'm remaining cautious. We thought we'd done it last year, but it turned out to be a bad year in the end."
