Ukraine, on their way to independently producing greenhouse vegetables

The Netherlands is one of the main buyers of Ukrainian vegetables. In 2013 The Netherlands spent 2.2 million dollars on vegetables from the Ukraine as did the United Kingdom. Russia spent 26.7 million dollar on Ukrainian vegetables keeping their spending well above that of The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. In the last 11 months nearly 500 new agricultural enterprises began in the Ukraine, a growth of nearly 10% on last year. The horticultural sector is doing particularly well where supply of vegetables is far greater than local demand.

Governmental support for agriculture
The government plays an important role in the growth of inland production and increased activity in the horticultural sector. In the last 3 years the government has built 104 warehouses, which offer a combined storage capacity of 140 thousand tonnes. The Ukrainian government is also subsidizing the construction of greenhouses and over the next 5 years the country expects to be no longer dependant on importing any greenhouse vegetables. Thanks to this state funded support, in 2012 over 50 hectares of greenhouse were used and this year a further 500 square meters of modern greenhouses will be added.
