Brazil: Government defines standards for integrated production of potatoes
The Brazilian Official Gazette of the Union published the Specific Standards for Integrated Production of Potato, which covers all the processes carried out in the agricultural production, harvest, post-harvest and processing of tubers.
After the regulation was published, the government will adopt a plan of action that includes management, training, environmental management, integrated pest management, environmental education and public policy for the production of potato handling. In coming weeks, producers, technicians and auditors should receive training so they can be certified.
The integrated production of potatoes should promote the traceability of potato production, pesticide controlled production that respect the environment, and the producers' compliance with good agricultural practices. The law will benefit three hundred small farmers in the southern region of Minas Gerais, who market the product to Ceasas and large supermarket chains.
