Overproduction, quality problems and price war with Holland
Spain: The price of Spanish vegetable continues to fall
Although temperatures have already fallen the price of Spanish vegetable continue to decline because there is an overproduction and their quality isn't very good for the stage they're in.
"The start of the vegetable campaign is bad due to overproduction and products not having the desired quality. Temperatures have not been adequate for the correct formation of the fruit," says Pepe Beltran, manager of Hispalco.
Moreover, countries with significant production, such as Holland, "have delayed the end of their campaign and continue to offer their vegetables in the markets, which has led to a price war in which prices continue do decrease, to the point that we are having to sell our products below the cost of production," he said.
Additionally, Beltran stated that the Russian veto was affecting the export of Spanish horticultural products, one of the strong and growing sectors of the Spanish economy.
"The closure of the Russian border has led to a higher concentration of products in the European market. Premium quality products, such as ours, are less affected by said concentration. Thus, we believe that if there was a higher selection of premium products there would be a lower concentration in volume and prices would be less affected," he stated.
