Cold weather contributes to tough Jersey Royal market

The harvest of Jersey Royals will continue till the end of July with a steady supply, but the weather made this season tough for the famous potato.

"It has been a frustrating season," according to William Church from The Jersey Royal Company. "It has principally been dictated by a period of prolonged cool weather across the UK. We managed the early weeks very well and were right up with the crop, but as May started the uplifts on all orders to coincide with promotional activity fell short of expectations."

During June there has been increased competition from other parts of the UK, so the volume export has remained steady. The Jersey Royals had their usual slot during May, but there was competition in the ‘New Salad and Baby’ market from imported and stored lines as retailers are move inclined to keep ‘price basket’ offers on shelves, according to Church.

The cold damp weather definitely affected sales, "April wasn’t such an issue as the supply is limited, but May was frustrating," explained Church.
