The leek market is doing well, "There is demand, but the product can't cost too much," says Pol Dendauw from Calsa. The price is now at 32 cents, and for producers that is not very high, "From the beginning of October until mid-November growers were getting good prices, but the good prices have fallen."
"Overall, this leek season has been better than last year," says Pol. "From October onward the prices were, on average, 45-50 cents because domestic production was low, as well as production in neighboring countries. Currently, the prices are reasonable and the yields per hectare are good. Growers may not lose money, but they will also not have much left over, I think."
Leek volumes are increasing, "There has been a lot of growth as of late because of the recent rain. Also, the mild temperatures have not had a good effect on consumption. But I expect the price to remain stable over the next few weeks." Calsa exports to several countries, "Right now we are exporting to various countries, except Germany. They had enough of their own production, but their volume is starting to decrease. Not much will change as Christmas nears, stores often do not advertise leeks around this time of the year. Demand will increase later; I expect in the beginning of the new year."
